Ottoman beds

Adjustable Metal Stool

Ottoman beds are perfect for creating extra storage space in smaller rooms such as guest bedrooms and children's bedrooms. Ottoman beds are designed so the base of the bed lifts up completely so items can be stored in the base. Many ottoman beds come with an assisted lift system which means the bed top can be lifted easily and accessing the storage space is simple and safe. If you choose an ottoman bed with a sprung base then you are not only investing in a storage solution but also choosing a bed which provides a restful and comfortable nights sleep. Most online bed shops sell ottoman beds and they can actually work out cheaper to buy than purchasing a bed and storage solutions separately.

Sofa beds

Visit sofa bed retailers online and you will find a huge range of sofa beds suitable for all requirements. Sofa beds range from modern and minimalist futons to plush sofa beds which look just like regular settees. Sofa beds are a great way to save space as when they are folded away. They take up around a third less room than a regular guest bed would. As well as being a useful addition to a guest bedroom, sofa beds can also save room in a bijou apartment or a studio as they allow extra room during the day and can be simply folded out to sleep on at night. Whatever room you choose to have a sofa bed in they will save you ample space and also change the function of the room from a study or living room into a bedroom as and when you have the requirement. Online sofa bed retailers often have superb discounts on sofa beds so shop around before you make an investment.

Stowaway beds

If you are short on space then a stowaway bed is the simple way to free up extra room. Stowaway beds are designed to be lifted up and secured to the wall, leaving you with lots of extra floor space available. If you have a small children's bedroom then stowaway beds save vital space which your children can use to play in, as pulling the bed out of the way will instantly increase the available floor space in the bedroom. If you live in a studio apartment then a stowaway bed will be ideal for changing your bedroom into a living room and back again so you have more flexibility with the space.

Space saving beds such as stowaway beds, sofa beds and ottoman beds are vital additions to your home if you are short on space as they can dramatically change the way you use your home and increase the room available.

Kitchen Counter Stools For Sipping Saki Or Sucking Smoothies

Your kitchen counter stool with a Japanese minimalism theme can double for sucking on those succulent morning fruit smoothies or sipping some teeny cups of Saki in the evening if you choose the bar set, bar chairs or stools that make the look come together.

Adjustable Metal Stool

You can go for the wooden stool or some backless counter stools if you want a very natural Zen style or choose some white vinyl swivel counter stools or a chrome counter height bar stool if you're after clean lines with a "soft green bamboo" feeling using more contemporary counter stools.

Adjustable Metal Stool

Here are some suggestions for a furniture bar stool that will go with these themes.

Zen Backless Counter Stools:

1. Xian Bar Stool - This is a modified Chinese classic, made from elm wood and has a rush seat. Choose your color: Java or Natural with a black stain finish.

2. Wabi Sabi Bench - One of the funkiest Zen theme seating ideas.

3. Ox Stool - With thick legs and looks like an Ox as its name suggests. Not delicate but very natural.

4. Have a look for yourself at Gingko Furniture, a company that specializes in Oriental themes using imperial palaces for stool inspiration. Please keep in mind that since each of the Zen style counter bar stools are handmade and follow the natural wood grain, there are no two pieces that are identical. However, if you go with the Gingko saddle seat counter stool style, rest assured that each stool has been finished using a 9-step process, which includes hand-rubbing each piece with lacquer.

Minimalistic Contemporary Counter Stools

5. Johnston Casuals Nova Adjustable Swivel Bar stool - metal back, swivel seat, adjustable height and all hand-made.

The entire collection of Johnston Casuals is minimalist and sleek contemporary in nature. They are a great choice for an inexpensive alternative to Japanese designer bar stools.

6. Eurostyle Fabia Adjustable Leatherette Seat Swivel Bar Stool - Chrome steel base and foot rest with a swivel leatherette seat and gas lift. (Buy online at: morebarstools.com/) Eurostyle has a kitchen counter bar stool or a counter height swivel bar stool that will suit your needs when searching for any ultra modern counter stools.

Build Furniture Without a Woodworking Workshop

When you get started in woodworking there are many paths to follow, forks in the road, dead-ends and shortcuts. It's a journey that our forebears would make with the help of a living, breathing guide: a master, a grandfather, a shop teacher.

Adjustable Metal Stool

Sadly, the guides are fewer in number today. And so you are left with people like me to help. Like the making of meat byproducts, it's not a pretty sight. Getting your woodworking instruction from books, magazines, television and an occasional class is a slow way to learn a complex task. In fact, many woodworkers spend a long time (years!) simply accumulating machines and tools before they ever build a single stick of furniture. And when they do begin to build, they inevitably discover that they actually need different machines and tools to make what they really want to make.

Adjustable Metal Stool

So they buy more tools and machines.

I want you to know something important that does not get said much: There is another way to begin building furniture. You don't need a table saw, a workbench or even a shop. You don't need to spend ,000 to build your first birdhouse. You can go to the home center in the morning and build something in the garage on the same day.

I'm not talking about building junk, either. The difference between a nice-looking set of bookshelves and a rude assemblage of 2x4s isn't a table saw. The difference is cleverness, sound design and just a wee bit of patience.

To build nice furniture you need three things: A handful of decent tools that you won't outgrow, some help getting started and some realistic projects to build.

The core of "I Can Do That" is a free 79-page manual you can download at popularwoodworking.com/icandothat that will help you choose all your tools and introduce you to the skills you need to cut wood and put the pieces together. The other essential component -- project plans -- can be found on many woodworking websites.

Eventually, we think you will outgrow this approach to construction as your skills improve. I bet you will want a table saw someday. And a drill press. And a smoothing plane. When that day comes, however, you will also have a house full of well-proportioned, well-built projects under your belt. You will be ready for those awesome tools, and the learning curve will be mercifully shorter.

If all this sounds like something that a bunch of idealists cooked up at a corporate strategy meeting, you're wrong. Though I had some carpentry training from my father and grandfather, I started building furniture on my back porch in Lexington KY, with a similar set of tools. Probably the only major difference is that I had a circular saw instead of a miter saw (at the time I did not know those existed). I built a lot of stuff with my simple setup -- some stuff we still have today and some stuff was long ago abandoned at the curb.

So this, dear readers, is a valid path.

My only regret in following it is that I wish that I had this manual (or a master woodworker) to make my journey easier.

Rules for Tools
I am not an emotional guy. I don't get nostalgic about high school, my first car or my first dog. I don't much hugs from family members at holiday gatherings. But I do have the deepest respect and affection for my tools. The care you give tools will gush readily into the things you build with them. None of the tools in the kit we recommend should be disposable; if you take good care of them, they will last.

First, take a look at the list of tools in the box on the previous page. You probably have at least a few of these tools already, even if you're an apartment dweller. The remainder can all be bought at any home center with a minimal investment. But before you rush out and spend your beer money, take a moment to read about my tool-buying philosophy.

You want to be careful when buying tools because these tools should last most of your lifetime. You won't replace these tools with fancy machinery when your skills advance, so you don't want to buy the cheapest tools on display in the tool crib.

So what's wrong with that jigsaw? Everything. Chances are the motor is underpowered, the bearings (if it even has bearings) are flimsy and the electronics are poorly insulated. Push the tool a little hard and it will -- no lie -- catch fire.

That said, you also want to avoid the tools that are loaded with lots of gizmos and features (with the price tag to match). In general, tools with lasers, bubble levels, wrist straps, micro-adjustable doo-dads and digital readouts are not necessary for accurate work. In fact, they might actually make life harder for you.

So I recommend you do two things. First, before you go shopping, visit toolseeker.com and browse around so you can see what brands and models are out there. Toolseeker.com also will help you figure out what to expect as far as price. Second, when you go shopping, seek out the brand-name tools, but choose a brand's stripped-down version of the tool.

Here's an example::Let's say you want to buy a random-orbit sander, and you like the Porter-Cable brand. The company offers the 343 model for and the 344 for . The more expensive model has variable speed. And while variable speed might sound helpful, it's not useful in a sander, really. Skip it and spend the on wood, glue or finish.

This philosophy extends to blades, bits and sandpaper. Buy brand names. Nothing is more expensive than cheap sandpaper, bargain blades or no-name drill bits. But don't buy the fancy professional accessories with plastic cases and flashy graphics. Flashy graphics are supposed to impress the guys on the job site. At home you will impress only the family dog.

Once you get your tools home, treat them like shards of the true cross. Never ever let your tools rust. Rust spreads like a cancer in ferrous materials (iron and steel) and can make your measuring and cutting tools difficult to use. There are a lot of products out there to prevent and remove rust, but the best thing going cannot be found on the shelf: a small can of vigilance.

When you are done with a tool, wipe down the metal surfaces -- especially the cutting surface -- with a rag that has been soaked with WD-40. Always keep the rag nearby (mine is seven years old) and renew it with a squirt of WD-40 when it gets dry. Wiping your tool down does two things: First, it removes dust from the tool. Dust can carry salt. Salt attracts water. The combination of salt and moisture will start breaking down your iron and steel tools.

Second, the WD-40 helps prevent rust by forming a thin protective barrier, albeit one that must be constantly renewed to be effective. Other people will disparage WD-40 (I once did). Ignore them.

Buying Materials
Another key component to the "I Can Do That" philosophy is that all the materials come from a home center. You don't have to buy your materials there, but you also don't have to trek out to some exotic hardwood supplier, learn the foreign language of lumber and spend a ridiculous sum on wood for a purpleheart planter box.

The truth is, you can build a lot of nice things with the run-of-the-mill (literally) lumber and plywood from a home center. You just have to learn how to shop for it.

Let's talk about home-center wood. In general, you are going to find lots of construction lumber -- white pine, yellow pine, Douglas fir and perhaps hemlock. This is sold in thicknesses best for construction 2x4s, 2x6s, 2x8s and so on. There are times you are going to want to pick through this stuff, but when you do, you need to know that it is usually too wet to be used immediately for furniture. If you buy construction lumber, take it home, crosscut it to rough length and let it dry out for a couple weekends before you dive in. You'll be glad you did.

In addition to construction lumber, you'll find hardwoods and softwoods that are thinner and designed to be used for trimwork in a house and even furniture. This stuff has been planed to 3/4" thick and is in convenient furniture-sized hunks. But you need to be quite wary of it. Why?

Well, first off, this stuff is far more expensive than wood will be at an old-fashioned lumberyard -- convenience costs, I tell you. And though it's quite expensive, the really flat and clear boards are just as overpriced as the warped, knotty and split ones.

So sort though the entire pile of wood when looking for boards. Yes, you might get dirty looks from the employees; but if you are going to pay for a pine 1x12, then by God you should get the best one in the store. When you are done, re-assemble the store's wood pile so it is better than you found it.

What sort of furniture woods are you going to find at the home center? For the most part, lots of pine, red oak, poplar, and sometimes maple and aspen. You can build a lot of nice stuff using this wood, especially if you are willing to paint your projects (we will talk about finishing next).

Also, don't forget to visit the moulding section of the home center. You can get away with a lot of store-bought moulding when building furniture -- you don't have to have a router. And the nice thing is that most stores sell the moulding by the linear foot, so you can cut what you need right there (and get some practice with a handsaw.)

As far as fasteners go, let me put one little bug in your ear. The worst thing you can do is to buy screws and other fasteners in those little boxes and plastic bags. You know, the ones that have five wood screws in them. Those are, for the most part, made from soft metal and cost too much. If I have to buy screws at a home center, I will buy a box of 100 or more that are intended for home builders. Heck, I would buy drywall screws before I would buy the little plastic baggies.

And as far as glues go, you're in luck. Home centers have a great selection of glue. Just don't buy the no-name stuff. It might be great. It might not. The name brands (Titebond, Probond, Gorilla) don't cost much more.

Finishing Materials
When it comes to finishing materials you are in tremendous luck when it comes to shopping at a home center. If you know what to look for you can achieve almost any kind of finish you desire.

First, let me say a word about paint. Don't let other magazines or woodworkers bully you out of using paint. A lot of excellent and well-made furniture is painted (for example, virtually every Windsor chair ever made). Personally, I love paint on certain pieces. It allows the graphic lines of a project to really stand out. Paint allows you to easily get the color exactly like you want it. And it's a finish that is hard to mess up. In general, I find that latex semi-gloss paint works very well for furniture. It's durable, doesn't stink up the house like oil-based paint and is easy to clean up.

But what if you don't like paint? Again, you're in luck. Home centers carry a wide variety of stains. And here's a trick that you don't hear a lot: You can mix two (or three or more) stains to get the color you are looking for. Just be sure to mix oil-based stain with oil-based stain, and water-based with water-based.

And while we are talking stains, I recommend you avoid the products that both stain and protect your project. These "one-step" products are usually just stains with a little more binder material in them. They offer little protection to your project, and I don't think they look good, either.

Instead, you should protect your wood with some sort of film finish. In general, you are going to find three sorts of products at the home center that will do this.

There will be Watco, Danish oil and tung oil. These usually are a blend of boiled linseed oil and varnish. It's OK stuff, but you need four or five coats to build up a nice film.

You'll find lots of polyurethane. In general, I think polyurethane is harder than necessary; plus, it doesn't bond well to itself. So sometimes a coat can flake off. If you use polyurethane, be sure to sand the finish thoroughly between coats with #320-grit sandpaper or sanding sponges.

You'll also find varnish or spar varnish. This is the good stuff. It's a lot like polyurethane, except it's a bit softer and bonds more easily to itself. Buy a can of varnish and a can of paint thinner/mineral spirits (they are the same thing). Thin your varnish with three parts varnish and one part paint thinner and you can then apply a nice thin coat with a rag. After three coats or so, you'll build up a nice sheen. Just be sure to sand your finish between coats.

Finally, get some paste wax and some way to apply it. I like the fine synthetic steel wool, which is a gray pad. The gray pad will smooth your finish to the touch and the wax will give the whole project a nice consistent sheen.

Don't Forget Your Workmate
The last important piece of your toolkit is a Workmate. This is a portable workbench that you will never outgrow, even if you become obsessed with workbenches, build 10 of them and write a book about it.

The Workmate is one of the greatest woodworking inventions of the 20th century. It's a big vise, a worktable, a clamping surface, a stepstool. With a Workmate, you can work almost anywhere in the house or yard.

When you buy one, get the nicest one in the store (I know that this contradicts my earlier advice on tools). The plastic ones are not so nice. In fact, the best way to buy a Workmate it to pick up an old one from a garage sale. My Jimmy Carter-era one cost me and even included the plastic dogs, which are great for holding panels.

Now Get to Work
Once you buy your tools, pick out a project and get your materials, you should dive immediately into the project. No matter how daunting the joinery journey ahead, I promise you that most of the barriers in woodworking are mental. The first step is always the hardest, and that's true when it comes to cutting your first pocket-screw hole or sand-shading your first piece of inlay.

'I Can Do That' Tool List
The foundation of the "I Can Do That" approach is the small number of tools you need to build nice and sturdy furniture. Here's a list of the basic kit.

- 12" combination square
- 16' tape measure
- jigsaw
- 10" miter saw
- 7 1/4" circular saw
- electric drill
- scratch awl and brad awl
- bastard-cut file
- file card
- palm-grip random-orbit sander
- block plane
- combination oilstone
- pocket-hole jig or a biscuit joiner
- 16 oz. hammer
- nail sets
- 4-in-1 screwdriver

Adjustable Metal Stool

What Makes A Good Mattress?

Just like eating healthy food, drinking eight glasses of water and following a regular exercise regimen, a good night's sleep plays a very crucial part to our health. Sleeping properly can help and speed up the improvement many of your body ailments, especially back pain and improper posture. That is, if you make sure you are giving your body a healthy sleep.

Adjustable Metal Stool

Many people take the six to eight hours (ideally, but not commonly) of their sleep for granted. Some people even think that there's nothing wrong with sleeping just anywhere, thinking that what is important is that they get to have some rest. What some people don't know however is that we are not giving our bodies the rest they deserve unless we find a proper place to sleep. Yes, in fact, you have to have a good, if not the best, mattress.

Adjustable Metal Stool

So how will I know which mattress is good enough?

If you really want to value your sleep, you may go further beyond good enough. However, what makes a mattress good is as different as people. Some people may view comfort over style while others vice versa. Still, some people have to find a mattress especially designed to suit their medical conditions. But generally, here are some guidelines on choosing what mattress is the best for you.

Level of comfort

The level of comfort a certain mattress can offer depends on the user itself. A firmer bed may be preferred by a back sleeper who thinks a soft bed swallows him whole. On the other hand, a stomach sleeper who thinks that a firm bed hurts his torso may prefer a softer bed.

Other than that, different levels of comfort are also given by different types of mattresses. There are several types of mattresses: innerspring, memory foam, latex, air bed and water bed. Since they are designed for different people, do yourself a favor and decide according to your own preference. Don't buy a mattress or a specific type of it only because your friend is using the same. What is comfortable for your friend may not be comfortable for you.

How would you know if a mattress is comfortable? First of all, you can try lying down on your friend's mattress. If ti fits you like a dream (pardon the pun), go ahead and buy one exactly the same. However, if you're buying out on your own, ask the sales people if you can try lying down on their mattresses. Have them assist you and as much as possible, don't try the mattresses without their consent. It may be forbidden in the store and you may be required to pay for the mattress. And the only thing worse than an uncomfortable mattress is one you never intended to buy.

Ergonomics for your health

Ergonomics is fast becoming one of the most important factors you need to consider before buying any piece of furniture, and that includes your mattress. While some mattress hunters may need to consult their doctor on which is the best mattress that will help improve their condition, many ergonomic mattresses are safe for anyone to use.

For a mattress to be ergonomic, first it has to be neither too firm nor too soft. A too firm mattress will not give enough support to your entire body and may only support just your heavier body parts. A too soft mattress sags down easily once you put weight on it. It does not give support to your back and this may also hinder movement.

A good ergonomic mattress should also be able to distribute your weight evenly. This way, tension and stress will not accumulate on the heavier parts of your body. On the contrary, a good mattress will distribute the pressure across your body and even across the bed. It helps improve both your posture and your blood circulation. A mattress that distributes weight evenly also minimizes the transfer of movement from one person to another so that even when your partner keeps on tossing and turning, you will be able to keep on sleeping comfortably.

Best value, not the lowest price

Budget is a very important factor to consider in choosing the best mattress for you. No matter what, be disciplined and decide to stick to the original budget you have allotted. As much as possible, do not extend or adjust your budget; you may only do this if you have already paid the more important things such as grocery and the house bills.

However, keep in mind that you do not have to choose the cheapest mattress in the market. You may save on money but you may also be compromising not only your sleep and comfort but also your health. Do not buy a mattress immediately but instead take time to visit all stores and weigh the pros and cons of each mattress that appeals to you. You also do not have to be tied to big name brands. Many small manufacturers of mattresses offer their products at a lesser price but with the same, if not better, quality as the larger companies.

Counter Stools - Choose Wisely

When it comes to counter stools, size matters. It matters so much that it can make the difference between food in your mouth, food on your clothes or food on the floor. It can make a difference between feeling your face is too close to your plate if you are eating, and too close to your beverages if you are drinking. A counter stool that is too short can also make the difference between feeling the need to constantly stretch your legs and feeling comfortable and relaxed. Width size can make the difference between sitting on the stool and hanging off the stool. Short counter stools can make an adult feel as if they are sitting in a child's seat.
Gone are the days of the "standard" 30-inch kitchen counter stool. In the past this height comfortably accommodated most counters and most people. These days, most designers are instead opting for heights of 45 inches or more. When this is the case, trying to sit on a 30-inch counter stool will be quite difficult, as you will be sitting far too low to be comfortable. So, furniture makers decided to adjust the height of the counter stools to be a little taller, now 34 inches,

Adjustable Metal Stool

The Foot Rail

Adjustable Metal Stool

Determining the height for a counter stool is only one of the comfort factors. Foot placement is also very important so the location of the foot rail must be taken into account before purchasing a counter stool. For a person of average height (using the current standard of 5'10" for an adult male) foot rail placement is usually midway to the floor or halfway between the seat and the floor. It is important to test out the placement of a foot rail. While on first appearances it may not seem so important, if you are unable to reach it, or you have to bend your legs too far to put them on it, this seating option could be very uncomfortable.

The next thing to keep in mind is the height of the chair proportional to the table or counter where you will be sitting. You should make sure there is about 8-10 inches between the seat and the underside of the table or counter. If not, it will be a pinch, literally, every time you, or your guests, try to take a seat, as your legs will be pinched between the countertop and the chair. This will not make sitting at your counter an enjoyable event, and likely will lead you and everyone else avoiding this seating area.

Adjustable and Custom Made Counter Stools

Two viable alternatives to the standard counter stool are the adjustable and custom designed counter stools. Prior to ordering these stools you should contact the manufacturer to see if there is a way to "test drive" the stools, especially adjustable stools. There may be a restaurant supply showroom with floor models of each. A good idea would be to take someone needing the custom seating with you to test for comfort. If the fit is good you can then place an order for a full set of counter stools.

Consumer Reports: High Chairs

You'll want a stable, sturdy model that can stand up to spilling, kicking, and regular cleaning for at least a year (some babies can't bear to sit in a high chair after that). A chair with a tray that can be released with one hand is also a plus. Picture your baby occupying your other arm while you're opening and closing the tray; it's just one of the many physical feats you'll be asked to master as a parent.

Adjustable Metal Stool

A high chair usually consists of a frame of molded plastic or metal tubing and an attached seat with a safety belt and a footrest. There are still a few old-fashioned wooden high chairs out there with a removable tray or arms that lift the tray over a baby's head, although they aren't always as comfortable for babies as the modern, form-fitting models on the market now, and most of them aren't certified as meeting the latest safety standards. You'll also find a few hybrid units, which can double as a swing or convert into other types of gear, such as a chair for an older child or a play table.

Adjustable Metal Stool

SHOPPING SECRETS

Look for a chair that has a waist strap and a strap that runs between the legs. If a tray is used, there should be a passive restraint, such as a crotch post, used in conjunction with the harness straps. A high chair, like a car seat or a stroller, is one of those shake-rattle-and-roll buying experiences. We suggest visiting the baby store near you with the broadest selection. Then do the following:

Open and close the fastener on the seat's safety harness (try it one-handed) to make sure it's easy to use. If it's not, you might be tempted not to use it every time your child is in the seat, although that's imperative.

Adjust the seat height to see how well that mechanism works. Some seats come with as many as seven possible heights. You may only use one or two, but you can't know for sure at this point.

Assess the seat cover. Look for a chair with upholstery made to last. It should feel substantial, not flimsy. Make sure upholstery seams won't scratch your baby's legs.

Make sure wheels can be locked (if you're buying a model with wheels) or that they become immobilized when there is weight (like a baby) in the seat.

Watch out for rough edges. Examine the underside of the feeding tray to make sure it's free of anything sharp that could scratch your baby. Also look for small holes or hinges that could capture little fingers.

Check for the absence of small parts. Make sure the caps or plugs that cover the ends of metal tubing are well secured. Parts small enough for a child to swallow or inhale are a choking hazard. Know when to fold 'em. If you plan to fold up your high chair as often as every day, practice in the store. Some chairs that claim to be foldable can have stiff folding mechanisms. Technically they may be foldable, but they're not user-friendly.

WHAT'S AVAILABLE

Major brands of high chairs include, in alphabetical order: Baby Trend, Chicco USA, Dorel Juvenile Group (Cosco), Evenflo, Fisher-Price, Graco, J. Mason, Kolcraft, Peg Perego, and Scandinavian Child. There are three general price ranges:

Basic high chairs

High chairs at this end of the price range (under ) are simple, compact, and generally work quite well. Essentially plastic seats on plastic or steel-tubing legs, such models may or may not have tray and height adjustments and tend to lack bells and whistles, such as wheels, foldability for storage, one-handed tray removal, or the capacity to recline, which you may not use anyway unless you're bottle-feeding. The seat is usually upholstered with a vinyl covering or bare plastic, and the pad may be removable and washable. The tray is typically kept in place with pins that fit into holes in the tubing.

Pros: For the money, a basic high chair can serve you and your baby well. But it pays to comparison shop, as some brands may be more suitable to your needs than others.

Cons: Watch for chairs in this price range with grooves in the seat's molded plastic (a gunk trap); cotton seat pads rather than vinyl, which tend not to hold up as well over time; and trays with side release buttons that are accessible to your baby. Some parents report that their babies can remove such trays--food and all--as early as 9 months of age.

Midpriced high chairs

In this price range ( to 0), you'll find many of the features of higher-end chairs, which include multiple tray and chair-height positions; casters for mobility, with a locking feature for safe parking; a reclining seat for infant feeding; one-hand removable tray; foldability for storage; and a three- or five-point harness plus a passive restraint when used with the tray. Most have cushioned, vinyl seat pads that can be removed for washing, although you'll also still see models with cloth covers in this price range; those are a challenge to keep clean. Frames and seats are typically made of molded, rigid plastic or steel.

Pros: This price range generally offers sturdier chairs with more usable features, although, depending on the model, price isn't always aligned with quality.

Cons: Some models are bulky and can eat up space in a small kitchen, although a large footprint provides greater stability. Just watch out that you don't trip on the protruding legs.

High-end high chairs

In this price range (0 and up), you'll find European imports and traditional solid-wood high chairs. Chairs at this end of the market tend to have thick, tubular frames topped by densely padded seats upholstered in vinyl. As a result, they may have a more solid feel and cushier digs for baby. Some models come with add-on fabric covers that are removable for laundering. These chairs can be adjusted to many different heights and reclining positions with a simple squeeze-release mechanism. Some have folding "A"-shaped frames to make them easy to store.

Pros: You'll get extra features, such as seven height positions instead of five, and often better quality, which is important to consider if you want the chair to last through another baby or more. Another bonus: Many parents report that companies that sell higher-end chairs tend to have responsive customer service, which helps if you have a problem.

Cons: Chairs in this range can be bulky because they tend to have a wider base for stability. That's good because it reduces the risk of tipping. However, you'll need more space to accommodate the footprint, which tends to be more like that of a baby swing.

FEATURES TO CONSIDER

Crotch post. To help prevent a baby from slipping out under the tray and getting his or her head caught, high chairs now typically have a center crotch post attached to the tray or to the seat. It's not meant to replace the safety belt, though. A center post that attaches to the chair rather than to the tray is better because it enables you to push your child up to the table without the tray but still have that center-post support.

Foldability. Some high chairs fold for storage. If that's important to you, make sure there's a secure locking system to prevent accidental folding while your child is in the chair or being put into it. Such a system should automatically engage when you open the chair.

Safety belt. As we mentioned, this is an important feature. When buying a high chair, examine the restraining straps to make sure the waist belt has a buckle that can't be fastened unless the crotch strap is also used. Safety belts should hold your baby securely in place, with no leeway for standing up or climbing out. Some high chairs offer an adjustable three-point harness--two adjustable shoulder straps and a lock between the child's legs--or an adjustable five-point harness--two straps over the shoulders, two for the thighs, and a crotch strap, which is ideal.

Seat adjustment. Seats can move up or down to as many as seven height positions on some chairs. They may also recline (in case your baby falls asleep right after eating). However, except for bottle feeding, don't use a seat in the reclining position while feeding your baby--that's a choking hazard. With a height-adjusting chair, the seat slides along the chair frame, locking into various positions. Height options range from nearly floor level to standard high-chair level, with the middle height low enough to allow the seat (with the tray removed) to be pushed up to a dining-room table.

Toys. Some high chairs have toys that attach to the tray, an option your baby will likely enjoy, although you can certainly buy toys separately that fasten to high-chair trays. But avoid strings when attaching them.

Tray. In general, you'll want a lightweight tray you can take off with one hand or that swings to the side when not in use. Certain designs help contain spills: a tray that surrounds baby on all sides, a tray angle that channels liquids away from baby, or a tall rim all around the tray. Some chairs have two trays: a big tray with a deep rim for feeding and a smaller one for snacking or playing. Don't be lured by a claim that the tray is "dishwasher safe"--most trays are too large to fit in a dishwasher.

Upholstery. Many models have seat coverings--or entire seat panels--that come off for easier cleaning. Be sure fasteners won't cause upholstery to tear as you pull off the seat or coverings. Opt for a seat cover with a pattern rather than a solid color; patterns are better at concealing spills. Some covers look like cloth but are really vinyl, which is easier to spot clean than cloth.

Wheels. Wheels may make it easier to move the high chair around, which is important if you'll frequently be hauling your high chair from, say, the kitchen to the dining room. On the other hand, wheels can also be a nuisance because they may allow the chair to move as you're trying to pull a tray off, or as you put your baby in. Older children may be tempted to take the baby for a joyride when you turn your back. Wheels on some models appear to make the chair less stable. If you decide on a wheeled model, look for locks on the wheels, preferably on all four. Some models come with locking casters. Still others have just two wheels and stay in place unless you tilt them on their wheels for rolling around.

RECOMMENDATIONS

There are pluses and minuses with every price range of chair. All can be tough to clean because, let's face it, baby food has a way of getting into every possible nook and cranny (and most seats have them somewhere). High-end models offer flexible positioning, extra-thick seat padding, and attractive upholstery.

Mid priced models generally represent the best value. And, like high-end models, they usually have an easy-to-remove tray, a sturdy safety belt, a tip-resistant frame, and a crotch post. But even some basic chairs can compete with higher-end models in terms of safety and other features. No matter what your budget, buy a chair of recent production that's certified so you can be sure it meets the current voluntary safety standard.

Alternative Uses For Your Living Room

Like most colonials, our home has a family room and a living room. And like most homeowners, we spend a lot more time in our family room than our living room. In fact, my 7 year old still gets confused when I use the term "living" room. It's now just known as the "red" room in our house.

Adjustable Metal Stool

With some minor changes and a lot of inspiration, you can turn your living room into something you'd actually live in! Here are some possible uses and design tips to help you get started:

Adjustable Metal Stool

Home office - Home Office means different things to different people. It could be a place to pay bills and file paperwork, or a place for kids to do homework, or you may run a business out of your home. Whatever your definition, focus your design around the function of the room.

Provide a clear surface on which to work. It's easy for a desk or table to become overrun with "stuff" resulting in no place to actually work. Tight for space? How about a table that drops down from the wall when needed (like a Murphy bed)? Add a comfortable desk chair that is adjustable and doesn't squeak (trust me on this one!). If your room has carpet, consider a plastic floor protector to help you wheel around easier. Add lots of hidden storage, but be sure to clearly label your storage units so you know where to find things. Lighting is key! You will need overhead as well as good task lighting. If there is no overhead light, add some up-lighting. Select functional accessories that add personality by do not cutter the space. But be careful not to make it too institutional - it's still your home, after all! Keep the palate light and bright to inspire energy. Minimize and secure cords as much as possible. Go wireless wherever possible.
Library - Love to read? Have a great book collection? Turn your living room into a cozy place to curl up with a good book! It's like having your own coffee house.

Add lots of shelving. Rather than just adding bookcases, consider customized bookshelves built around a window to create a window box seat. Not only will you get additional storage, you'll add a wonderful focal point to the room. Instead of a traditional sofa or loveseat, opt for two or three comfy club chairs (depending on space). Gather those chairs around a round glass-top coffee table with a wood shelf underneath to show off some of your favorite coffee table books. Provide task lighting for each reading chair. Pharmacy lamps are great for this. Make sure you also have enough lighting to see the books on the shelves. As a library, you can comfortably use darker paint to create warmth. Accessories - add a warm toned rug, soft throw blankets, and pepper the walls with black and white photography to create a coffee house feel.
Toy room - A toy room can be a great compromise between parents and kids in the eternal battle of toy clutter!

Opt for shelving with attractive bins that can hide the clutter inside them, and allow for pick-up in less than 5 minutes. Open storage looks messy, even when the room is picked up. Avoid a collection of mis-matched toy organizers - they look tacky! Make sure the room is comfortable for grown ups as well as kids -add a comfortable chair or loveseat. Add a kid-sized table and chairs. Tip: put a machine washable rug underneath to survive craft time! Keep the room bright with cheerful colors, but avoid "cutesy" - save that for their bedrooms. If your kids enjoy movies, add a TV and DVD player. Set clear rules for cleanup, and stick to them!
Media room - Do you enjoy watching movies? Create your own movie theater in the comfort of your own home!

Add French or pocket doors and light-blocking shades to create a dark, quiet environment on demand. Add a large screen TV with surround sound. Add a dimmer switch to better control the lighting. Add task lighting to allow for discreet multi-tasking while watching a movie. Depending on how many people will be watching the movies, add enough comfortable seating. Tip: use two loveseats angled at the corners of the room opposite the TV, and toss a couple bean bag chairs behind them for extra seating when necessary. For decor, just frame a few of your favorite movie posters and hang them on the walls. Don't forget the DVD organizer and a handy remote control holder!
Mud Room -Depending on the layout of your house, you could convert your living room into an oversized "holding cell" to accommodate coats, back packs, shoes, calendars, cleaning supplies, dog bed, pet food and much more. You get the idea!

Assign a "locker" to each family member (don't forget the family pet). Lockers provide vertical storage that makes good use of the space while hiding its cluttered contents. It's a great storage solution for jackets, purses, backpacks, and more. Lockers can be wood or metal, whichever you prefer. Add wall hooks for guest coats, umbrellas, etc. Add a shoe rack for wet or dirty shoes. Place vinyl placemats underneath to protect your floor. Create a mail box for each member of the family to control mail flow. Add a credenza or file cabinet to file all that mysterious paperwork that wanders into the house. Create a message center by painting a wall (or part of a wall) with magnetic and/or chalkboard paint. Make it "pop" by adding a large empty gold leaf frame! Add a colorful rug. Rather than get one large rug, opt for a couple smaller rugs that are machine washable. How about a small drop-leaf table and a couple chairs for small projects, or for putting boots on?
Stag room - What can I say? If you must have one, here are some ideas:

Add a pool table, and a dart board (if room). Include a bar and some bar stools. Opt for a darker paint color that won't show wear and tear. Display your favorite neon bar sign, deer head, or other prized possession. Add a juke box in the corner if you like. Don't forget the traditional "dogs playing poker" print!
Overwhelmed? Call an Interior Re-designer in your area. They specialize in making rooms work using what you already have. It's a very cost-effective way to bring new life to your old room.

It's time to start actually living in your "living" room!
